Despite defeat against Colombia: Fans believe the DFB women will reach the round of 16
The DFB women have missed out on an early place in the last 16 of the World Cup. National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg's team managed to score a late equaliser against a robust Colombian side, but still lost the game 2-1 in the end. FanQ asked football fans in Germany about the German national team's performance and prospects for the rest of the tournament.
Majority of supporters call for Colombia's Arias to be sent off
With the 2:0 opening win over South Korea behind them, the Colombians started with courage. They attacked the DFB team early on, stood well defensively and caused problems for Magull, Bühl, Popp and Co. from the very first minute with their hard tackling. As a result, it was the South Americans who had the first chance of the game with a header from Mayra (8th minute). The fact that the South Americans' robust behaviour sometimes overstepped the boundaries of what was permissible became clear after a good quarter of an hour when Arias brought down Popp with an elbow strike off the ball. However, the referees did not penalise this action and the German captain was able to continue playing after a brief treatment break.
In a survey conducted by FanQ, 40.22 % of German football fans stated that they thought the assault should have resulted in a sending-off. In contrast, 7.61 % of those surveyed thought that a warning would have been sufficient, while a further 4.35 % of supporters felt that the action was not enough for a whistle. 25.00 % of the respondents did not see the action. Overall, the fans gave the referee, who generally took a very generous line, a mixed performance. In a corresponding FanQ survey, they gave her an average rating of 2.28 out of a possible five stars.
As the match progressed, however, the German women got into the game better and better. Despite increasing control of the game, the chances to score against the compact defence of Colombia came about more by chance. Apart from a blocked shot from Oberdorf (22'), Popp had the only really good opportunity for the DFB team. However, the striker, who was left completely alone, missed the opposing goal with her volley from around six metres (43') At the other end, the South Americans limited themselves to counter-attacks. However, Frohms had no problems with the shots from Bedoya DurangoK' (28') and Mayra (40'), meaning that the teams went into the break with a goalless draw.
After the break, the Colombians also began to attack more aggressively and were promptly rewarded with the opening goal. After the German national team failed to clear an opposing corner properly, it was 18-year-old Caicedo who outwitted Däbritz and Huth in a remarkable individual move and then curled the ball into the right-hand corner (52').

After conceding the goal, Martina Voss-Tecklenburg's team finally took control of the game, but similar to the first half, the German offence continued to struggle against the Colombians, who were once again defensive-minded and repeatedly made pinpricks with quick switchovers from Caicedo (57') and Mayra (86'). Only midfielder Oberdorf occasionally had a chance to finish, but narrowly missed Perez's goal with a drop kick (63') or was prevented from finishing at the last moment (82').
And so it was the 21-year-old from VfL Wolfsburg who was hauled down by Perez shortly before the end (88'), and Popp converted the resulting penalty to equalise the score at 1:1 (89'). In the six minutes of stoppage time, the European runners-up pressed for the winning goal, but conceded the late knockout after another counter-attack by the South Americans. Hendrich initially saved from Mayra (90.+6), but from the subsequent corner, the DFB women, defending in space, left Vanegas completely free at the penalty spot, who was not asked twice and headed in the much-acclaimed 2:1 winner for her colours (90.+7).
Football fans in Germany give the German national team an average rating when it comes to the performance of the European Championship runners-up. In a survey conducted by FanQ, they gave the DFB team an average rating of 2.54 out of a possible five stars for their performance in the second group game.
The DFB team missed out on an early place in the round of 16 due to their defeat against Colombia and are now under pressure in their final group game against South Korea. Thanks to their 6:0 victory in the opening game against Morocco, the runners-up in the European Championships are as good as guaranteed a place in the knockout round with a win.
In this context, FanQ asked football fans in Germany about the chances of Frohms, Hendrich, Brand and Co. reaching the round of 16. More than two thirds of respondents (67.06 %) are still optimistic in this regard. Only 10.59 % of respondents believe that the DFB women will not make it through the group stage. The decisive match against South Korea will take place next Thursday. Kick-off in Brisbane is at 12 noon. At the same time, the Colombians will face Morocco in Perth.
