Real Madrid: Fans believe signing a Casemiro replacement is unnecessary

Following the departure of €70 million man Casemiro to Manchester United, speculation is mounting about potential successors for the central midfielder. Two names that are frequently mentioned are those of Premier League players Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg of Tottenham Hotspur. In this context, FanQ surveyed German football fans as to whether the ‚Royals‘ even need to sign a replacement for the 30-year-old, and whether the two candidates would be a good fit for the reigning Champions League winners.

Casemiro heir: Bruno Guimaraes and Pierre-Emile-Hojbjerg in talks with the ‚Royals‘

According to reports from Spanish newspaper „AS“, Bruno Guimarães is said to be the preferred option to succeed Casemiro, who has moved to Manchester United. The club would ideally like to transfer part of the €70 million received from the midfielder's transfer to Newcastle in order to lure the 24-year-old Brazilian to the Spanish capital.

The problem: Newcastle coach Eddie Howe recently stressed that the club has no intention of letting their defensive midfielder, whose contract runs until the summer of 2026, leave. „We are trying to build a squad here that we believe can take the club to success in the coming years. We want to build this squad and improve the group without letting our best players go,“ said the 44-year-old when asked about the speculation surrounding a move for his protege. „As for the speculation, I have no problem with it. I think it's a compliment for Bruno and for how well he has done for us. I think he's been incredible, and he's only going to get better from here. He's a very valuable member of our team,“ he continued.

With regard to a potential transfer to Real Madrid, the question arises as to how sensible a move would be at the present time. With Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde and Dani Ceballos, the competition in the ‚Royals‘' central midfield is high. Therefore, FanQ surveyed football fans in Germany on whether the Madrilenians even need to sign a Casemiro replacement. Around a third (33.58 %) of respondents are of the opinion that it would indeed make sense to sign a direct successor to Casemiro. More than half (51.82 %) of the survey participants, on the other hand, hold the opinion that a new signing in the central midfield position is not necessary given the current personnel situation at the reigning Champions League winners.

Nevertheless, Real coach Carlo Ancelotti is considered a big fan of Tottenham's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. As the British „Telegraph“ reports, the 63-year-old believes that the former Bayern professional has all the qualities to take on the role of a classic defensive midfielder and thus fill the gap left by Casemiro's departure.

Ancelotti already tried to sign the Dane during his time at Everton. However, he opted to move from Southampton to ‚Spurs‘ and has only missed two Premier League games since signing in London in the summer of 2020. In 103 appearances, he has scored six goals and provided nine assists. His contract runs until 2025. This season too, he has started in all three league games. In the heated 2-2 derby against Chelsea on the second matchday, he scored the goal to make it a temporary 1-1 draw.

FanQ surveyed German football fans on whether the 27-year-old would be a good fit for Real Madrid, in light of the ‚Royals‘' reported interest. Just over half (54.17 %) of those who participated in the survey do not think Hojbjerg is the right man to succeed Casemiro. In contrast, 38.33 %of respondents believe the Dane would be a good fit for the Spanish capital club. It remains to be seen whether Real's management will decide to sign another midfielder, and if so, who the choice will fall on.
