Home European Championship 2024: German football fans expect only an average atmosphere
Also in relation to Fan orientation, common good and international understanding are the trailers Not very confident
FanQ-survey: Many fans still have fond memories of the 2006 summer fairytale. Under bright bluem sky, Germany was drenched in a sea of black, red and gold flags and welcomed football fans from all over the world under the motto "The world as a guest with friends". The benchmark for the next football tournament at home, the EM 2024, is correspondingly high. However, the signs are not (yet) favourable.
Cologne. The German national team and its management are on the brink of collapse after the disappointing Results at the last Tournaments under pressure to succeed. Also There is a lot of noise about the reorganisation of the structure and processes in the context of the national team. In view of this situation FanQ on behalf of the SID asked over 2,000 football fans about their anticipation of the tournament and the expected atmosphere, the DFB team's sporting performance and the socio-political dimension of Euro 2024.
Unsurprisingly, at 48.2 % in total, anticipation for next year's home European Championships is slightly (22.6 %) or even much (25.6 %) higher than for the 2022 World Cup. By comparison, the proportion of those who are less excited about the upcoming tournament is only 29.2 %. On the whole, however, German football fans still only expect an average atmosphere at EURO 2024. When asked about this, they voted an average of 3.02 out of five possible stars.
One reason for the divided opinion is the DFB team's recent mixed sporting performance. For the majority of fans (59.3 %), it is important that the German national team plays successfully. In the corresponding survey, 19.7 % awarded four out of a possible five stars, while 39.6 % even voted for the highest possible number of five stars.
In view of this, it is not surprising that the anticipation of the European Championship in their own country is not yet so pronounced. This is because 84.8 % of football fans in Germany are very dissatisfied (66.9 %) or dissatisfied (17.9 %) with the sporting performance of the Flick team in recent seasons and only award 1-2 out of a possible 5 stars.
At the same time, the majority of German football fans do not agree with the framework conditions under which EURO 2024 will take place. For example, 38.5 % of supporters believe that the tournament will be completely or predominantly orientated towards the interests of sponsors. In contrast, only 19.8 % believe that fan interests will be predominantly or fully taken into account.
Furthermore, there are other factors off the pitch that limit the anticipation of the tournament. The majority of fans (55.3 %) think that the organisers will not succeed in setting new standards in terms of sustainability, environmental protection and the common good. Only 15.1 % of those who took part in the survey believe that this objective will be achieved.
Fans are similarly pessimistic with regard to the hope that EURO 2024 can make a contribution to international dialogue and understanding. 47.2 % of participants believe that the EURO will make a small or very small contribution to this. Only 19.6 % are optimistic about this question.
Against this background, Prof Dr Harald Lange from the Institute of Sports Science at the University of Würzburg summarises: "Of course, sporting performance is a key factor for identification with the national team. However, the results of our study show that other factors are also crucial if you want to win over the fans again. We will investigate this further in our next study."
