Fans most surprised by the ‚Werkself‘ win over Atletico Madrid

The first part of the second Champions League matchday has gone very positively from a German perspective. Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen were able to win their home games against FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid respectively, both by 2-0. Eintracht Frankfurt also managed to win their away match against Olympique Marseille with a 1-0 victory. Against this background, FanQ surveyed German football fans about which of the three results surprised them the most.

Three wins, no goals conceded: German teams shine on the European stage on Tuesday

The return of star striker Robert Lewandowski to Munich's Allianz Arena was the overriding theme on the past Champions League Tuesday – and it was far from a pleasant experience for the Pole. Not only did he miss several high-class scoring chances during the match, but he also lost the group game against his old employer by a score of 2-0. For the German record champions, however, it meant their fifth consecutive victory against the Spanish top club.

Unlike in recent matches, however, the Catalans were not without a chance this time. In fact, FCB were clearly the better team in the first half. Coach and club legend Xavi's team played with vigour, but without luck. Barça created three huge opportunities between the ninth and 21st minutes, but Pedri and Lewandowski twice failed to score, either because of the outstanding Manuel Neuer or their own inability. Bayern coach Nagelsmann brought on Goretzka at half-time for Sabitzer, who was cautioned. From then on, the record champions got into the game better and better, capitalised on their first two opportunities in the second half and took the lead with a double strike in the 50th and 54th minutes. The goals were scored by Hernandez, who headed in a corner from Kimmich, and Sané, who finished off a Musiala assist with aplomb in ter Stegen's box. After that, Bayern limited themselves to standing securely at the back. As a result, they only allowed one more chance to score through Pedri, who failed to hit the post in the 63rd minute, and held on to their 2-0 lead.

But the other two German representatives were also able to celebrate yesterday evening. Eintracht Frankfurt achieved their first Champions League victory in the club's history. Trainer Glasner's team narrowly won 1-0 at Olympique Marseille. For the Hessians, it was the Dane Lindström who put his side in front two minutes before half-time. The 22-year-old was able to convert a deflected pass from Kolo Muani with a right-footed shot from about eleven metres. In the second half, a lively game with chances on both sides then developed. Apart from a goal by Kamada in the 79th minute, which was disallowed for a narrow offside position, no more goals were scored. Frankfurt's best chances were missed by Lindström (54th) and Kamada (82nd). On the OM side, it was Rongier who failed to beat Trapp (66th). In the end, SGE were thus able to record their first success in the premier class.

Bayer Leverkusen were the third German club to win their match against Atletico Madrid. The ‚Werkself‘ got off to a good start and made their first dangerous forays into the visitors‚ goal in the seventh minute through Hlozek and Andrich. In the 25th minute, it was Demirbay who narrowly missed with a long-range shot. Two minutes earlier, Seoane's men were lucky that a handball by Tapsoba in his own penalty area was not penalised with a penalty. The ‘Werkself‚ also got off to the better start in the second half and had good chances to score through Hlozek (49‘), Schick (70') and Kossounou (72'), but none of them came to fruition. At the other end, de Pauls had the only chance for the 'Rojiblanco' (68'). When everyone was already expecting a draw, it was Andrich who converted a pass from Frimpong to give Leverkusen the lead in the 84th minute. Three minutes later, Diaby sealed the tie after a counter-attack via Hudson-Odoi and Frimpong. After a false start in the DFB Cup and Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen finally achieved the much-desired relief with the 2:0 victory.

Given the positive results from a German perspective last night, FanQ surveyed football fans in Germany about which of the three victories had most surprised them. A clear majority of 80.77 %stated that they had not expected a victory for a struggling Leverkusen against Atletico Madrid. The fact that the good results of Eintracht Frankfurt at Olympique Marseille (11.54 %) and FC Bayern against FC Barcelona (5.38 %) only followed much further behind in this survey suggests that respondents had significantly more confidence in a success for both Eintracht and the record champions beforehand than for the ‚Werkself‘.
