From a player's perspective, fans consider Wirtz's extension the right decision

Midfield talent Florian Wirtz has extended his contract with Bayer 04 Leverkusen early until 2027. The 19-year-old had only signed his old contract with a term until 2026 at the beginning of the year. FanQ has therefore asked German football fans whether the decision is the right one from the player's perspective and whether he will help the Rhinelanders win a title.

Leverkusen ties down next key player long-term

Leverkusen publicly announced the contract extension on Thursday. The German international is therefore already the second key player, after Patrik Schick, that the works club is tying down long-term. An departure in this summer transfer window is therefore likely off the table. Whether the young playmaker's contract includes a release clause is not yet known. His market value is estimated at €70 million on „transfermarkt.de“.

Wirtz, who is currently recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament tear, moved to Leverkusen in January 2020 from local rivals 1. FC Köln and quickly became a regular starter and key player there. Since then, he has been involved in 29 goals in 60 Bundesliga games for Bayer (13 goals, 16 assists). In September 2021, he made his debut for the German national team. In his four appearances before his serious injury in March 2022, he managed two assists. Despite the adverse circumstances, the attacking midfielder still hopes to participate in the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year.

Leverkusen's former sporting director Rudi Völler was enthusiastic that they were able to „show one of the undoubtedly best German players of the coming decade important and convincing prospects.“ The 62-year-old also stated: „Florian knows that in Leverkusen we will remain competitive in the coming years and will be fighting on a national and international level. And he will be an important part of that.“

In this context, FanQ asked football fans in Germany whether the Rhineland club will win a title with Florian Wirtz. However, more than half of them (56.78 %) believe that the works club will not achieve the big coup even with the 19-year-old super talent. As many as 31.36 % believe that the liaison between Wirtz and Bayer Leverkusen will be crowned with success. Nevertheless, a clear majority of 86.87 % think the decision is the right one from the player's point of view, with only 12.12 % believing that the German international is making a mistake by extending his contract again. In general, 63.21 % think that young professionals are well advised to sign contracts for a longer period, whereas 19.81 % see it differently.
