After the home European Championship: identification with the German national team has increased significantly

18.07.2024

Fans are satisfied with the DFB team's sporting performance and are already looking forward to the next tournament

Cologne. The home European Championship in Germany is over and has found a worthy title holder in Spain, but national coach Julian Nagelsmann's team also impressed in sporting terms and was the only team to come close to defeat against the Furia Roja. The FanQ voting platform has drawn a conclusion and asked over 5,000 football fans about the tournament in their own country, their satisfaction with Germany's performance, their identification with the German national team and their anticipation of the next competition - the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

As a result, supporters' identification with the German team has risen significantly in view of the largely convincing performances and the positive mood in the country. A total of 64.5% of the survey participants stated that this was now stronger than before the home European Championship. The same applies to the emotional bond with the Nagelsmann squad. 80.3 % describe this as strong (50.2 %) or even very strong (30.1 %). This combined value was 63.1 % in the survey two weeks before the home European Championship and has therefore risen by over 17 percentage points.

In addition, 75.8 % of German football fans believe that the DFB's image is now better as a result of the continental competition in their own country, which is probably also due to the fact that 77.7 % of survey participants awarded either four (31.2 %) or even five (46.5 %) out of a possible five stars to the statement that it is important to them personally that the DFB team plays successfully.

It is also fitting that 75.5 % of respondents claim that they regularly follow the German national team's matches. For example, 20.4 % answered the corresponding survey with four stars and more than half (55.1 %) even with a full five stars. With regard to the last European Championship, 83.4 % of respondents said they watched all five matches of the DFB team live, while only 4.1 % of respondents did not watch any of these matches. In terms of the tournament as a whole, 68.6 % of supporters watched at least ten matches live in the stadium or on TV.

Satisfaction with the German team's performance is also evident from the fact that a total of 77.5 % of supporters gave four (39.1 %) or five stars (38.4 %) to the question of how much their sporting expectations of the DFB team were met. Compared to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, 88.4 % of football fans in Germany enjoyed EURO 2024 more. The atmosphere among the fans in particular was rated positively by the survey participants, with 89.3 % giving it four (22.3 %) or five stars (67.0 %).

It is therefore hardly surprising that 69.9 % of supporters answered the question about their anticipation of the next major tournament, the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, with four (21.7 %) or five stars (48.2 %). This figure is even more than eleven percentage points higher than the comparable survey in the run-up to the European Championship, which stood at 59.9 % two weeks before the competition (19.2 % = 4 stars, 40.7 % = five stars).
