Half of the fans want Jürgen Klopp as national coach

After failing to reach the last 16 of the World Cup in Qatar, calls for a new trainer are growing louder. Hansi Flick may have secured his job until after the European Championship in his home country in 2024. FanQ asked fans which ‚top coach‘ they would like to see as national coach instead of Flick.

Qatar made Flick sweat

The 57-year-old Flick took over Jogi Löw's national team last year. Fans and the national team management under Bierhoff thought highly of him. He previously gained experience and expertise as head coach at FC Bayern Munich. The Germans hoped for a coherent preparation and a good performance at the World Cup in Qatar from him.

The team finished third in a group with Spain, Japan and Costa Rica, failing to qualify for the round of 16. A 1-2 loss to Japan, a 1-1 draw against Spain and a 4-2 win against Costa Rica earned them four points and third place. Once they were considered tournament specialists, but in Qatar, this tournament specialist proved to be a mirage. Spain and Japan advanced to the knockout round as first and second in the group, both subsequently being eliminated from the race for the World Cup title. Flick himself was self-critical after the group stage exit: „My coaching team and I look optimistically towards the European Championship on home soil. As a team, we can achieve much more than we showed in Qatar. We missed a great opportunity there.“ He also concluded: „We will learn our lessons from this.“

After returning to Germany, Flick met with DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and DFL Supervisory Board Chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke in Neu-Isenburg near Frankfurt am Main for a crisis summit. Flick remains national team coach. Among other things, they discussed the future of the national team. They also talked about the distribution of Bierhoff's responsibilities. Neuendorf said: „With regard to Oliver Bierhoff's successor, we have agreed to first discuss the future structure of this area of responsibility within the DFB in order to then make a personnel decision.“

Christian Streich, manager of SC Freiburg, criticised the Germans„ performance in Qatar on SWR and in the “Kicker„ newspaper. He stated their defensive play was insufficient for the high-calibre chances they created offensively. Furthermore, he blamed the national team's failure on their lack of unity as a team, asserting they could have achieved more together. “The national team isn't Manchester City, where you can sign a new player for £100 million for one position. That's not possible. But collectively, you can achieve a lot," said the Freiburg coach. His protégé and defender Matthias Ginter got playing time after being substituted on against Costa Rica, but Flick did not select him for the starting lineup.

Other top teams knocked out of the World Cup have already taken their first steps: Luis Enrique is no longer the coach of the Spaniards, and Louis van Gaal has indicated that his role as national coach of the Dutch will likely be his last coaching position. In Germany too, some fans are wishing for a new national coach.

FanQ asked fans who they would like to see in Flick's place. Half of the fans (50.48 %) would like to see Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp in charge of the national team, but 18.10 %would prefer former PSG manager Thomas Tuchel. 11.43 % of those surveyed would like Pep Guardiola's expertise as national coach. However, fans will continue to favour Hansi Flick and his coaching team who will be following future national team matches.
